When the Mark III Newport was created by Capital Yachts, the location of the mast step in relation to the keel and the waterline was changed; the mast step was moved aft. This creates larger headsails and, there by, better light air performance. Although I don't recommend relocating your mast step to convert your Newport into a Phase II, you might try shortening your headstay and lengthening your backstay. This will move the center of effort of your sails forward and reduce weather helm. In San Francisco Bay this solution had a great effect and the wind strength in San Francisco is notorious. Additionally, in reviewing the length of factory supplied standing rigging on multiple Newports, we discovered a wide varience.
