WARNING --- INSPECT ALL BOW STRAPS, BELOW THEIR CONNECTION TO JIB FORESTAY OR JIB FURLER. Latent manufacturing defect: Apparently the heliarc welding of the anchor roller channel to the edge of the bow strap caused the portion of the bow strap adjacent to the weld, to have undergone crystalline weakening. This 1.75" wide bow strap corroded from the weld area, outwards. Inspecting the fracture revealed that 75% of the strap had corroded, reddened and partly fractured, during its 21 years of life, with less than the 25% width showing clean metal after the catastrophe. Our Marie Casualty Surveyor had seen this type of fracture a few times before, but our Rigging Company had not seen this type of break in its 26 year experience. INSPECT ALL BOW STRAPS FOR INTEGRITY. jbyerlein1@aol.com
