My rudder post seems to have a slightly different problem. It seems the through-hull shaft does not line up with the cockpit floor opening. Its about an inch off, probably due to 'oil-canning' of the hull between the keel and rudder. This creates a lot of friction in the rudder. Anyone else have this problem? You can only see it if you remove the rudder and then try to reinstall it.
Also, I discovered when I took out my rudder that it was bent backwards a few degrees. This brought the axis of rotation well forward of the middle creating a lot of weather helm. To fix it, I had to jam the rudder under a 20 foot dumpster and put a 10 foot steel pipe over the post, jumping on it until it was approximatly straight again.
However, it seems the Newport rudders were designed to have a lot of weather helm. As a possible solution to this, has anyone tried to add to the leading edge of the rudder to balance it out somewhat? I know this would make the boat ineligable for racing, but if it sails and steers better, than it seems worth it to me!
