For what it is worth - we purchased a 1976 Newport 28 a year ago - it had been on jack stands for 2 years and needed a home. It had a crack in the vicinity of the keel/hull joint. As a matter of fact, the water that had collected in the bilge was leaking out of the crack in the keel. We were concerned so proceeded to chip and grind away the glass and various resins that had been applied over the joint in 23 years. We found that there was a considerable gap (mismatch) between the lead and the hull that had been filled with a soft compound. It provided no support to the keel, regardless of how tight you mad the keel bolts (which had been embedded in some sort of filled resin - another problem). We managed to chip out all of the old resin and compound and refilled the gap with West Systems epoxy filled with microfibers. It should now be totally solid, but we have missed this year's sailing season in Maine.
