I replaced the original Atomic 4 with a Universal Model M3-20 (18 HP) in 1990. Universal has since been bought out by Westerbeke, but the M3-20 is still currently in production. As you are probably well aware, the Atomic 4 was a tight squeeze in the N30 MK II. The main problem being vertical clearance at the cockpit soul. The M3-20 was the only diesel I was able to find that was short enough in profile to fit with only minor modification. The M3-20 was designed as a direct replacement for the Atomic 4 and even the existing engine bed logs needed no modification. I did the installation myself and it went pretty smoothly. You will need to shorten the shaft somewhat (I purchased a new shaft) and if you are using the original 2 blade fixed prop (either 12" diam x 6" pitch or 12" diam x 7" pitch) you will need to increase the pitch considerably due to the 2:1 gearbox on the new diesel. I had a naval engineer run the numbers through a computer program and he came up with a 12" diam x 12" pitch, This worked out to be the ideal prop as it limits engine RPM to about 95% of max RPM and it pushes the boat at hull speed at approx 2700 RPM in flat water and calm winds. You will have to remove the fuel tank for a thorough cleaning and to install a fitting for the return line from the engine. I installed a Racor fuel filter on the small bulkhead behind the galley in the cockpit locker as well as the electric fuel pump. This gives easy access for maintenance. I also installed a 12" diameter inspection port with a rubber O-ring (available from West Marine) in the cockpit soul over the engine to give access to the oil fill and the antifreeze in the expansion tank. All in all, I believe the entire job took me approximately 35 hours to complete.

A couple of things you may want to do while you have the old engine out of the boat: 1. Rent a power washer and clean the entire engine/fuel tank area thoroughly, then give it a couple coats of epoxy enamel paint (makes keeping it clean a lot easier) 2. Replace exhaust hose, fuel fill hose and fuel tank vent hose 3. Since you will have the shaft removed, I would replace the shatf packing in the stuffing box and also replace the cutlass bearing.

Good luck
