I've sailed a Mark III and I really liked it. I have chartered a J-105 and the 36-41 Beneteaus. I put these two boats on opposite ends of the sailing experience. I put the Newport 30 Mark III in the middle if not closer to the J. If I understand your description, you might place the Mark II even closer to the J in 10+ winds. This is appealing to me.
On another note, does the Mark II give up any head room? Or berth length? (The Mark II I'm interested in is about a 9 hours drive from me.) The Mark III is, as I understand it, has 6'4" headroom.
