battery charging and Steaming light

I have a 1987 30 MK III and have a terrible time trying to keep batteries charged. Any suggestions? Also does anyone know what light bulbs are used in the optional, middle mast mounted combination spreader light/forward steaming light? The book lists GE-68 for the mast head light, but doesn't give specs for this optional light.

Even if you don't have a solution, but own an 87 MK III, please drop me a line. I have MANY issues with this boat.
